The gardens themselves, established in 1884, are located at an altitude of just 110 meters above sea level in the Dibrugarh region, yet the terrain's topography favors frequent mists and high air humidity. This allows not only tea cultivation but also the cultivation of many tropical fruit trees, and this area was inhabited by elephant families. This also explains the name of the gardens themselves; in the local language, the word Hattialli means 'Incoming Elephant'.
